How To Handle A Traffic Stop in Jersey City, NJ

Jersey City, New Jersey is by far the most populated city in Hudson County and the second most populated city in all of New Jersey. Routine (or not so routine) traffic stops are a part of everyday life in Jersey City. Sometimes they lead to nothing and sometimes they lead to a major ticket or even an arrest.

For almost everyone, the experience of getting pulled over for even the most routine traffic stop is an incredibly intimidating encounter. From the flashing lights to the demands to see paperwork to the uncertainty of what will result, the entire experience is really designed to intimidate. With that in mind, here are some tips on how to handle a Jersey City traffic stop:

  • Pull over: As soon as you see the police signal to pull over, make every effort to do so as quickly and safely as possible. While it may take a moment if you are on a busy street, make sure that the officer knows you are trying to get over so that you are starting the encounter on the right foot-by obeying the law.
  • Stay calm: In the time between when you pull over and when the officer walks to your driver side window, take some deep breaths and collect yourself so that you are as calm as possible throughout the interaction with the police officer. Staying calm will not only help things go smoothly but also make sure that you do not get yourself in more trouble! The traffic stop is not the time to try to argue your case so make sure you are being responsive but not arguing with the officer- that approach never ends well.
  • Give the officer what they want…but not more: You already know that you are going to be asked for your drivers’ license and registration so make sure that is in an easily accessible location. If the police officer starts asking you leading questions that might ultimately incriminate you, don’t answer them. Similarly, don’t preemptively get out of the car unless the police officer asks you. Ultimately, you should let the police officer guide the entire encounter and respond to his requests rather than be defensive or try to predict what he or she wants.
