Upcoming Labor Day targeting impaired drivers

A joint project with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and the U.S. Department of Transportation, the national “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” yearly campaign to reduce traffic deaths attributed to drinking or drugging and driving, is now in force.

The sobriety campaign started August 15 and will run through the upcoming Labor Day weekend that ends on Sept. 1.

Drunk driving wrecks 100% preventable

Some accidents appear to be unavoidable. But for those who get into collisions after drinking alcohol or using drugs, these are completely preventable wrecks. Still, over 12K lives are blotted out in crashes involving an impaired or intoxicated motorist.

Almost a third of all traffic deaths here in America involve at least one driver with a blood alcohol content (BAC) that exceeds the legal limit. The demographic group with the highest number of impaired drivers is males between the ages of 18 and 34. Also, nighttime highway fatalities are three times more likely to be fatal to one or more people involved.

Drive High, Get a DUI

That’s the slogan the two agencies chose to supplement the message of Ride Sober or Get Pulled Over. They are also targeting impaired motorcyclists, as statistics from two years ago show that more than 40% of bikers who died in single-motorcycle accidents were legally intoxicated.

Avoid a charge this upcoming holiday

There are a few things in life that are out of our control, but avoiding an arrest on DUI charges is not one of them. Be smart and let a sober driver take the wheel.

If you get arrested for DUI here in New Jersey, learning more about your rights and responsibilities under the law is recommended.
