Alcohol Education Classes

Attached to any alcohol-related traffic offense in New Jersey is mandatory attendance of an Intoxicated Driver Program at a local Intoxicated Drivers Resource Center. Intended to educate and prevent, failure to attend a course can result in license suspension, fines and possible jail time. As part of the program, drivers are individually evaluated to determine if a more concentrated drug or alcohol treatment is required. Often referred to as the IDRC aftercare, when a professional determines that additional treatment is required, there is a 16- week minimum course. For many the IDRC aftercare represents the first time the individual has had professional treatment for a drug or alcohol problem.

Under New Jersey law, the IDRC has the authority to order additional treatments lasting anywhere from four months to one year. These treatments are often in addition to what the court orders in your case but nevertheless are mandatory. No judge can overturn this decision.

The mandatory treatment is something that should not be taken lightly as the state attaches penalties (including license suspension until completion) for those individuals that fail to complete their aftercare program. Following a New Jersey DWI/DUI, the best way to get back on your feet is to complete all of your court-mandated requirements as quickly as possible. A DWI is always a devastating event but you do not need to prolong the agony by delaying completing any of your requirements. In addition to IDRC aftercare some of the potential punishments attached to a New Jersey DWI conviction include:

  • Jail time
  • Fines (including three years of New Jersey surcharges)
  • Community service
  • Ignition Interlock Device (IID)
  • Loss of driving privileges
