Expungement

You’ve served your time; you should be able to move forward with your life. Unfortunately, long after prison time is served, fines are paid and community service hours accomplished, many people find their status as a criminal offender limits their ability to find a job, go to school, get housing or get a loan.

Every time you have to check “yes” when asked if you have ever been charged with or convicted of a crime, your opportunities are being limited. What if you could check “no”?

At the Law Offices of Thomas Carroll Blauvelt, LLC, I understand how limiting a criminal record can be. I can help you expunge your criminal charges and convictions, and wipe your record clean.

In 2016, the governor signed a law that eases expungement waiting periods. The new law reduces the waiting period for expungement of a felony from 10 years to five years, and reduces the waiting period for misdemeanors from five years to three years. This is good news for those with criminal records or who have been charged with a crime.

The Hardest Part Of A Conviction Is Often The Criminal Record — Make It Go Away

Expungement is a great option that many individuals do not even realize is available to them. Under New Jersey law, many criminal charges and convictions can be expunged, including:

  • Assault
  • Disorderly persons offenses such as marijuana possession
  • Minor drug charges
  • Shoplifting
  • Theft
  • Burglary

Obtaining an expungement is not simple, nor is it guaranteed, and there are many crimes that are not eligible for expungement. As an attorney with over two decades of criminal law experience, I know what is expungeable and what is not. And I know how to best present your case for expungement. Together, we will work to have your criminal charges, arrests and convictions expunged.

Your Current Employer Could Find Out About Your Record

Many individuals also feel the impact of a criminal conviction at their existing jobs as more and more employers conduct random criminal background checks. For example, if you hold a professional license such as a nursing license, CPA or even an MD, your governing licensing body can and will continue to monitor your criminal record.

Expungement allows you to move forward with your life instead of always having to answer for past mistakes.

Don’t Let Your Past Limit Your Future
